Whoop Whoop! The end of the school year has arrived and the 6 week summer vacation can finally start! What a crazy year, but by the grace of God I made it to the finish line!
As you guys know, I am such a busy bee! I have many passions in life, but the biggest one is for Education. It runs in my blood! My parents are both retired teachers now, but my brother and myself are still going on strong!
I love working on projects whereby I can integrate the Multiple Intelligence theory (1983) from American psychologist, Howard Gardner. When I graduated for my Bachelor in English, my thesis was based on this theory because I truly believe that there’s hidden treasure in each and every child.
After teaching a couple of years, I noticed that a lot of pupils dealt with learning disabilities and behavior disorders in class. I could see that it wasn’t unwillingness but the necessity of extra guidance. So, I decided to study for a Master in Special Educational Needs and specialize in Remedial Teaching. This way I gained more insight how to help them achieve better results, even though they struggled with their Autism, Dyslexia, AD(H)D etc.
I always say that the art of teaching is to discover their talent, help them develop it and encourage the belief in themselves!

For the past years ‘Clusius College’, the high school where I teach organizes a multicultural week at the end of the school year. It’s a week full of numerous activities whereby our pupils learn more about: different countries, ethnicities, languages, religions, food and many cultural aspects.
All the 2nd year pupils are divided among the chosen countries. They receive the assignment to make a PowerPoint presentation, go on an excursion related to the country, inquire more relevant information from guest speakers, participate during art and cooking workshops and learn foreign music, dance, movies or sports.
Last year, I was very active with the children’s home: The Family Hut in Sumatra and decided to challenge myself and set up a project during this particular week. It was a huge success and my mentor class won first prize in 2018!
This year, I’ve been planning a sabbatical to Surinam in 2020. So I decided to set up another project based on my country of birth, ‘Mi Switi Sranan’! Unfortunately, we didn’t win this year but the knowledge gained was the greatest wealth!
A major shout out to my dear colleague and good friend: Yoeri Kok for organizing this inspiring week! Thank you for the opportunity and for making all this happen! In the pictures below you can catch a glimpse of the end results!
